UV disinfection systems utilize natural ultraviolet light energy to eliminate microbiological contamination. A powerful ultraviolet light energy is produced by the lamp which attacks the genetic core of illness-causing microorganisms. This eliminates their ability to reproduce therefore the microorganisms simply die.
Water is treated by running it through a watertight chamber containing the powerful UV light which produces a lethal dose of germicidal UV energy to the microorganisms.
UV Systems are most commonly used in the treatment of private well water. The quality of well water changes from day to day based on rainfall and snow melt and may or may not contain harmful microorganisms. Water that is safe today may not be tomorrow.
Yes. The UV light that is produced to disinfect the water is non-visible. The light that you see from the lamp is not what is doing the work. Over the course of time the UV light created by the lamp loses its intensity, therefore should be changed annually. The lamps are designed to generate the necessary intensity for one year.
No. UV is a physical not chemical type of disinfection therefore it does not change the flavor, odor or pH level of the water. Unlike Chlorine, UV does not produce disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes and haloacetic acid.
